Pan de Muerto
The Day of the Dead is also the only day of the year when you will be able to find Pan de Muerto (literally ‘bread of death’). It’s a type of brioche sprinkled with sugar and often flavored with orange sesame seeds. The pan de muertos (Spanish for Bread of the dead) (also called pan de los muertos) is a type of bread traditionally baked in Mexico during the weeks leading up to the Día de los Muertos, which is celebrated on November 1 and 2. It is a sweetened soft bread shaped like a bun, often decorated with bone-like pieces. Look for it in the bakeries!
Castanyada
The Castanyada is a popular Catalan festival, celebrated on All Saints’ Day. Like Halloween, its origins are in an ancient ritual festival of the dead. It consists of eating chestnuts, panellets, sweet potatos and preserved fruits, typically with moscatell to drink. It is common for street vendors to sell hot toasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes wrapped in newspaper so don’t miss out!
