Barcelona, Spain - UrbanBuddy introduces the 2nd annual Off Campus [workshop], first held during the fall of 2010 in Barcelona, as a cost effective means of international travel, study and exploration. Our aim is to connect students to Barcelona through a professional collaboration of experiential learning and cultural immersion. By participating you will observe the latest urban planning practices, tour the most innovative offices, visit new architecture (along with some old stuff) and learn from professional experts on-location; all in support of your own experiential research. Workshop Brief.

The Off Campus [workshop] is a 5 day program based on a platform of experiential learning, supported by academic advisers, professional lectures & networking, university tours, guided site visits, office visits, cultural city tours and social events. UrbanBuddy will provide our student membership to all participants, including our 24 hour support to handle pre-departure and on-location logistics.

FIELDY STUDY: qualitative associations through photography

1 credit hour: The workshop will total 40 hours of presentations, lectures, architectural tours and professional office visits. Please contact your off campus academic advisor to coordinate the additional field study credit or independent study option.

Unofficially / officially it’s called the ‘Full Moon Party’ and it takes place on Mar Bella beach, the third beach past the Olympic Port. People gather in a large drum circle to watch musicians, flame throwers and dancers join together for a show! It usually attracts only about 50 people so it’s still quite underground… great vibe and good friends around.

Bring drinks and food and don’t forget your bathing suit… or just go in the nude, after all it’s a nude beach!

Metro: L4 Yellow line, stop: Poble Nou. From there walk downhill 3 blocks on C/ Bilbao until you hit the skate park and sand dune, Mar Bella is just beyond the dune.

The Mercè festivals will be the shortest and most austere so far (read article in Castilian here, La Vanguardia). The city’s main fiesta, will be a day shorter than last year, from September 22nd until the 25th, but will maintain a virtually unchanged level of activity despite cutting costs. St. Petersburg will be the invited city, linked to Barcelona since the Eighties, the highlight of which will be a performance of Swan Lake in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Speaking at a press conference yesterday the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Culture said that the budget for cultural activities will be €3.4 million, compared to the €3.6 million budget of last year. For the third consecutive year, the reception party at the Palacete Albéniz has been cancelled—the last party cost half a million euros in 2008. Councillor Marta Almirall, in charge of the Festival explained that due to the reduction in budget, events taking place in the Teatre Grec, the Canódromo and at the stage at the Portal de la Pau have been cut, however she wanted to emphasis the inclusion of the Plaça de la Mercè as the main stage for the traditional activities such as the habaneras,sardanas and castells. As usual the end of the festivities will be marked with the Festival del Cielo, which can be seen from the beaches of Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and the Marina and the piromusical event at the four towers of Puig i Cadafalch.
