Money

[ Banking and money ]

The transfer of money from one location to another is much easier since the popularity of the ATM and credit cards. Below we have listed a number of useful tips helping you to maximize the use of ATM and Debit cards and reduce your international transaction fees during your travel or study abroad experience.

ATM and credit cards

Most credit and debit cards charge additional fees and percentages for international withdrawals and purchases. To avoid these fees, we recommend opening up a savings account or checking account with a bank that has international affiliations like Bank of America or HSBC. Bank of America customers will be able to withdraw from Barclays ATMS without a conversion fee of transaction fee. HSBC is another great bank to use; you will find their banks and ATMS all across the world.

Cash conversions

The cheapest way with withdraw cash abroad is via ATM. Using an ATM will get you the most current conversion rate and will allow you to get money almost anywhere in the word when you need it.

Large withdrawals & wire transfers

One thing to remember is that most ATM’s will usually only allow you to withdraw an international equivalent of 300 USD per day. This is not generally a problem when traveling but it is something you should keep in mind if renting or leasing an an apartment. If you are a caught in a pinch and need a large sum of cash in a hurry you can visit a local branch of an affiliated bank like a Barclays or HSBC or wire money electronically through Western Union. Western Union is a great tool and their website is very easy to use. You can send money to yourself almost anywhere in the world by either by phone or their easy-to-use website.
